Fahrenheit to Celsius

Type degrees Fahrenheit to get Celsius, or Celsius to get Fahrenheit. Results are rounded to 0.1 degree.

Temperature

°F
°C

Type in either box. For temperatures below zero, start with a minus sign, like -10.

How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Subtract 32, then divide by 1.8. Dividing by 1.8 is the same as multiplying by 5/9.

°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8   and   °F = °C × 1.8 + 32Exact conversion equations from NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C and the NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8.

  1. Subtract 32For 72 °F: 72 − 32 = 40.
  2. Divide by 1.840 ÷ 1.8 = 22.22…
  3. Round22.2 °C to one decimal.

Questions people ask

What is the formula for Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then divide by 1.8 (the same as multiplying by 5/9). For example, (72 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 22.2 °C.
What is 98.6 °F in Celsius?
(98.6 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 37.0 °C.
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
(350 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 176.7 °C. Many recipes written in Celsius round this to 175 or 180 °C.
At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius the same?
At −40. (−40 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = −40, so −40 °F equals −40 °C.
